[ He's been in the village a few days now, not the type to raise a fuss right away and start demanding answers, not until he's got a few things figured out for himself, and not until he has a better grasp of what he's dealing with. He spends a lot of that time trying to figure out what the hell kind of place he could've ended up in to have wings on his back. For a little while, he wonders if he's dead, but he remembers where he was right before he woke up here, and that seems unlikely. The fact that this could be a real place, and he's stuck here, is somehow harder to swallow, though.

Eventually, he does need some answers, and that means talking to other people, which is why he winds up at the Good Spirits Bar. People tend to be a little easier to warm up to in a bar, in his experience. ]

It very rarely ends well, I know.

[She's surprised she hasn't gone mad from it yet. Then again there were distractions enough. So very many, in fact, it's caught her by surprise that she has been here for so long.]

It was after...everything. [A quiet moment where she'd felt content for the first time since she'd arrived. Happy. Safe. That almost made it worse to have him taken.]

There is a saying, at least among those I know well. The Malnosso are assholes.

[ And he can tell, not just from the look in her eyes, but this subtle shift he detects in her voice, that she really does know, that it's not her just blindly agreeing with him. They've only just met, but they've shared a few personal things about one another -- just the tip of the iceberg, for him at least -- and he feels like he could already have a good sense about when she's holding something back, not telling him everything. But he'd once made a living conning people, so he has to adept at reading them. ]

They gotta be, to do all this.

[ And because she asked: ] What was he like? The man who got sent back.

[Before coming here, before spending months somewhere and putting down roots, relaxing and building a safehaven, she might have been difficult to read. It was part of who she was to be withdrawn, stoic, subtle. In the village the defenses have dropped or worn away bit by bit. She's more open and expressive. Fluid.]

Rick? He was...

[She finishes her glass and stares at the worn wood for a moment. Lines up her thoughts as neat as she can and then just lets her mouth run.]

Rough like soldiers can be, but warm. Sarcastic. Convinced me to try beer and learn to enjoy it. Fairly simple in his desires, selfless. More determined than most men I know.

[ As much as this village has changed her, the island has done the same for him. He's evolved so much from the man he was when that plane crashed. He spent so much of his life hating himself, and wanting everyone else to hate him, too; if they hated him, they wouldn't try to get close to him, and then he never had to lose someone again. ]

More important, he cared about you. Man had a good perspective, sounds like.

A good eye. [She huffs a laugh.] He was a sniper. A good perspective was important to his work.

So he knew a good thing when he had it. [ Probably not the most comforting thing he could say at the moment, given the circumstances. But the compliment slips out nonetheless. ] This other guy, they got any similarities, other than the same face?

[That makes her duck her head, were she younger and less worn she might blush. But she isn't younger and she is so very tired, and so very embittered by this place.] He is also in the military, or a militaristic organization. And he is also a sniper.

[ Flirting is something he used to do to excess, and he knows there was often nothing particularly charming about it, that it was more obnoxious than anything else. That charm won't ever go away, it's just part of who he is; some people aren't going to fall for it, no matter what, but at least it's more of a genuine charm now, and not simply a means to acquire something, to con something out of another person.

And the compliment is sincere, and that's apparent because he expects nothing and no particular reaction in return. ]

Now tell me, sweetheart, you do anything in particular to piss someone off, or is this kinda generosity just one of the perks?

That depends on who you ask. As far as I'm concerned I've been a very productive and peaceful test subject. Haven't caused much trouble at all. [Well. There was June. That had been an eventful mess, but for the most part she'd remained uninvolved.]

The Malnosso do what they do and we adapt, question, and plan in turn. It's one way to stay sane. Trying to take any of this personally will swiftly drive you mad.

I'm bettin' that's true. [ She seems strong-willed, could be feisty and determined if the situation arises. But she also doesn't seem like the type to start rounding up a resistance movement and doing something rebellious that might lead to getting killed. ]

And I can think of other reasons I'd rather be goin' mad.

Do I want to know, or are you making some manner of double entendre?

[ There's an esoteric smirk on his face, and he meets her eyes just out of the corner of his. ]

Well, sunshine, it could mean a lotta things. [ He's finished with this glass, so he pushes it forward, and leans back, hands folded on the bar. ] Kissin' is just about the best way to lose your mind. [ It's easy, of course, to assume that kissing naturally leads to other things, but that's all he says. ]

Do you have a habit of spinning endearments for those you do not know well, blondie?

[Normally it doesn't bother her, and she'll let things slide on account of him having to cope with her looking like a woman he's come to love- but she does have a name and would appreciate it's use. She's not overly vexed, though, and there's an amused glint to her eyes.]

Mm. It's been some time since I has had occasion to lose my mind that way. Drawbacks of being in a relationship with a celibate man.

Well, I just like to think of it as part of the charm. [ Meaning yes, he does frequently utilize endearments; more often, he assigns nicknames to people, though. Almost everyone. And they aren't always endearing, at that.

He rests his forearms on the bar, leaning in a little. ]

This a different guy? Not GI Joe, or the uh, other sniper?

Ah. So you are supposed to be a charming American. I honestly had not noticed.

[Her lips twist into something wry, head tilted to the side. Charming men, she knows an overabundance of them. And not a one has done wholly right by her. Still she knows well enough not to read too much into this.]

I do not think you would believe me if I told you. But it is a different man.

S'posed to be. [ He's unfazed by her words, though slightly encouraged by the smile, even if he detects the intent behind it. Unlike some men who like to charm because it makes them feel good about themselves to "hook" another woman, he's far more sincere. He doesn't throw it out there to excess with anyone he's not interested in on some level. ]

Now, why wouldn't I believe you?

Because.

[She orders herself a glass of water and sits back, smiling to herself. This was always something that made life a little more amusing. Explaining that fiction could be fact so very easily.]

he's Obi-Wan Kenobi.

[ It's a good thing, for both of their sakes, that he's already finished his glass, and hasn't just taken a sip of anything. Because he would have choked, or coughed it up. As it is, he shoots her the most dubious expression he can manage.

Because, really?

And yet -- he's stuck in a place he has no idea how to escape from, and he has wings on his back. ]

Now how the hell did you manage to snag a Jedi? [ How is it even possible? ]

[She knows how it sounds, and were she to speak to herself from nine months ago she'd have much the same expression on her face. This was something from a mad dream- but then most things in the village tend to be that way.]

If I had any idea, trust me, I would tell you. It simply...happened. Mostly when I wasn't looking.

[ He sucks in a long, deep breath, his right eyebrow just quirked upwards in a persistent expression of disbelief and shock.

And then he's brushing a hand over his face and shaking his head with a small shrug. ]

Guess that's how it happens, ain't it? You love him, then?

...I do.

[It is not something said lightly or easily, something she's only ever told Ben the once. But it is true. Even with as much as it frightens her- it's true.]

[ His head tilts to the side for a moment, in genuine interest. She does love this man. From what little she's revealed of herself so far, he realizes what it must have taken for her to acknowledge and admit that. ]

So this place ain't all bad.

The people make it bearable. IT's still not somewhere any of us should be but...

[She shakes her head and turns to look at him.]

Sometimes you find reasons not to hate it.

I can believe that.

[ It won't ever stop being strange to talk with someone who looks exactly like Juliet. But he likes her, for her own merits. ]

Found two reasons today, matter of fact.

[A soft huff of laughter, another sip of water. As frustrating as life could be in the village, sometimes she finds a few things worth enjoying.]
