Alright, I get it. So the journal is some sort of half-book half-iPad technomagical means of communicating, and this place gives you wings. [ A beat. ] There's -- there's a cheesy Red Bull ad in there somewhere, but I'm not going there.

[ She clears her throat. ]

I'm -- my name is Jane Foster. I'm a astrophysicist with SHIELD, if that means anything to anyone. -- Please tell me it means something to someone. For once I'd be happy to put up with all their obfuscation and bureaucratic red tape and smug, irritating agents if it meant I was home. Working.

Do -- the people who bring us here, do they even care when or how or ... anything about the time they bring us from? I was on the verge of discovering -- something incredible, maybe the answer to all their problems -- I mean, assuming they want people to go home. What do I know? Maybe they don't!

What exactly is an astrophysicist?

The technical way of putting it would be to say I study the physics of stellar phenomena. The easier way of saying it is that, uh, I study space. [ Not sure how simple this needs to be. ]

Some of the other residents might have one you can borrow as well until you build up a collection. Over the last few months several of us have been rewarded for missions. Otherwise it looks as though you only have trees and paper to work with.

Space. You need computers to study space? Just find a telescope.

Trees and paper. Great. [ Some of the sarcasm goes out of her. It's hitting her, a little, just how far back she's been set. ]

Oh yeah? Why don't you tell me a little about what you were taught.

Everything you would expect. Learning the names of stars, constellations and planets, studying the location and the movements, discovering the environments of the planets and moons. Simple things.

... okay. [ Mollified that he wasn't mistaking astrology for astronomy. ] Yeah, that's -- the real basics of it. What I study is a lot more complicated than that. The physics of space is really -- complex. It almost never agrees with the physics we observe on earth. It's all about the split between quantum mechanics and Newtonian gravity - reconciling the two isn't really my thing, but I run into it a lot. My area of study focuses on -- bridges. Wormholes. Shortcuts in spacetime that can bridge massive gaps in the fabric of the universe. I've been chasing down the answer for years--

But all my work is home. And tied to a lot of tech I built myself. Without any of that here...

Without any of that here you're just as stuck as the rest of us. [A lot of that just went over his head, but it's kind of fascinating in the same vein.]

[ She's not sure whether to laugh or not, and the amused, complete disbelief in her voice speaks to that. ]

This -- this really should be harder to swallow. So ... I guess it won't be a weird question to ask if anyone from Norse mythology is around?

Prince Arthur, actually. He's not much of a king just yet.
