[Action - Good Spirits, early evening]

[Every society, no matter where you go, has a way to get drunk.

Ginia muses on the thought with a faint smile as she sits in Good Spirits, sipping at a milkshake with a few shots of Baileys in it. It's been a strange, long day that's ended with being shot and bleeding out on a run and beginning anew in a strange village with wings. Worse was a lingering feeling she knew the village, somehow, in some strange way. It was impossible, she was sure she would have remembered being here. But the feeling was enough to get her back on her feet, into a clothing store for a fresh set of clothes, to the item store to pick up some supplies, and to Good Spirits.

She sits at a table toward the side, alternating between watching people as they come in and reading the guide provided in the journal. It's an interesting thing, the guide, and she takes her time memorizing information.

Later in the evening, she ventures out with some questions on the journal.]

It's an interesting thing, the journals. Written messages, audio messages, being able to address everyone as a whole, talk to individuals, send private messages, never runs out of pages, and looks like any regular sort of book. Tidy bit of technology, or magic I suppose. I like the guide too, very well-written and informative, my thanks to the author.

Anything else a New Feather should know about? The little local sorts of things. Legends, stories, suggested dishes to try at the restaurants, the dos and don'ts, those sorts of things. Give me your best. I have time.

[Assistant, guardian, caretaker, friend... the lines begin to blend after awhile. Listening to him list off Abel's chores reminds Ginia of a time long ago when she had such a similar list, but instead of being the one rattling off the list, she was the one carrying out all the tasks. She smiles out of an odd sense of nostalgia, but the memory hurts a little too.]

Sounds like a busy man. When does he find time to sleep?

Probably when I am locked in for the night. [He says this so easily. He notices how her smile seems a bit odd, different. And he can't quite place it.]

Locked in?

The Church did not want me leaving without whomever was my assistant, thusly locked up. I liked the room, good view of some trees and a garden. [He doens't seem concerned about this at all. As if it were normal, because to him it was.]

[He may not be concerned because he's used to it, but the idea unsettles Ginia. She gives him a good look over, trying to place his age.]

How old are you?

34. [After all, the Church is only doing it for his own good. What if he went off and some rebel decided to kill him? An easily preventable thing.] And yourself?

37. [Exactly 37 years and six months if she wanted to be accurate. Funny how deaths work out like that.]

Have you always been locked up?

[He nods as he stores that. 37? People age well here.] Correct, after all, The Church needs its Judge alive.

It seems there are other ways than locking you up at night. [Her mind goes to a girl of sixteen and her story of how every night everyone had to go back to their dorms and the doors were locked and wouldn't open again until the morning. Curfew, she said, and for their safety. The safety of locked doors, monitored rooms, and armed guards patrolling the halls.]

Is there only one Judge? You?

They don't trust other people. [He says this with a wave of his hand.] And yes, from what I can understand I am the only Judge that has been.

Seems like a lot of pressure, being the only Judge.

Its my duty to the faith. If I work hard at it, I will have moved up into my next life. You see, its good to have a goal.

That I understand, having a goal. It gives you direction in your life.

[She shouldn't care, it's not her business, he's a stranger, he has his own friend or assistant helping him here, it's not her business, she doesn't need to ask...]

Are you treated well?

By the Church? Of course. Abel makes sure of it. [For other people, they might have gotten suspicious. Luce on the other hand sees it as an honest question.]

[Ginia makes a mental note to talk to Abel later even as she mentally kicks herself for getting involved in someone else's business.]

What do you do as Judge?

The Judge of the Faith of Sancia. [He says his full title.] I do exactly as it says, the church has laws it has to follow, and I ensure they are followed. [After all, it isn't too hard to fall into line. He should know, he does it.]

Such as decide if something was purposeful or not. [Although at times, the Church decides and said he did. But its the church, it knows better than he does.]

How do you decide if something purposeful? Off certain guidelines set by the Church?

Correct, [and his own abilities, but- he was told to keep those underwraps. after all, who am I to question it.

What do you do with the things that aren't purposeful?

It depends on the crime, I think the three most common are execution, torture or a fine.

[That execution and torture are listed before fines disturbs Ginia. She expected it on some level, having read up on her world's history, but it doesn't make it any less disturbing.]

What sort of things warrant executions or torture?

Murders, rapes, kidnappings: usually those get the executions sometimes there are others. Torture has things like heresy, theft, producing an image of a holy figure...

[Murders and rapes and kidnappings. She can understand that and can't argue against it either. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, but Ginia can't deny tracking down and eliminating scum was a large part of her life.]

Producing an image of a holy figure? Like artwork?

Correct, such as of a priest or trying to draw the deity.

How is that worthy of torture?
