[When Sabriel had first awoken she almost had a panic attack. She was weaponless, her armor stripped away in favor of a light dress that was far too thin and far too disoriented for her liking. It was only after she’d scoped out her immediate surroundings, searched the area physically as well as feeling for any Dead that she finally relaxed and took proper notice of the journal lying close by.

A thorough examination of the journal and read through the guide later she’s fiddling with the pages of the thing, the video flickering on to show her frowning down at the pages, unsure of how exactly to work it at first. Regardless of what questions and frustrations she had there was something she had to get clear to whoever was already living here, especially if they came across her equipment.]

If anyone happens to come across a brown leather bandolier of bells, please do NOT touch them unless you want to possibly die a swift death.

And I mean that in the most literal sense I can express.

[She gives the screen a very stern look, eyes narrowed and hard to fully impress her seriousness of the situation before sits back a bit as she sighs.]

With that out of the way, does anyone know where I might acquire a pair of breeches? Or rather, how to get there? I’m currently…well.

[The screen tilts as she lifts the journal, slowing turning on the spot to show her completely surrounded by trees, no other landmarks in sight.]

This? No. It is a much needed reminder that I am not so young I can smoke however much I like in a fit of pique any longer. I will simply have to find another way to busy my hands in times of stress.

I will find a way to fill my time. They are a crutch as it is. [She waves a hand and starts back up the trail.] I will think of something Mademoiselle Sabriel.

...I know the cooks at College used to hide flasks of brandy around the school, although that isn't a very constructive coping mechanism I bet.

While I am not and never shall be a cook I must commend them on their creativity. [Adele chuckles, shaking her head.] I will simply have to indulge my house mates in their determined drive to see me fattened up by sweets.

Perhaps a pet might keep you occupied?

I already live with a dog and two cats; but in time they may become fond of me. One never knows with cats.

That's true, cats are very picky, sarcastic little creatures. Well, that's not true for all of them. Just Mogget. [Her expression dampens a bit but she shakes it off, offering Adele a small smile.] Perhaps a bunny? One of the girls kept one at the College.

If I find one that will lower itself to be a pet around here? Then I see no reason why not. Rabbits are fairly sensible creatures, if excitable.

It couldn't hurt to ask I suppose. But yes, Jacinth's bunny had...er, almost had a rather bad accident while running away from a bath.

Concerns for another time, yes? For now we walk, we get you fed, we find your clothing and your bells, and then we find you somewhere to stay. Lodging here is quite simple. You simply find a free room and claim it as your own.

I- Really? It's that simple? [Sabriel tips her head in thought, eyes following the river with a nostalgic gaze.] I don't suppose there would be anything actually on the river would there?

A house on the river? Not that I know of. There is a house by one of the lakes, but nothing on a river. If you want I suppose you could build one.

I guess it was too much to hope for. [Sabriel chuckles with a soft sigh as she shakes her head.] I'm afraid I don't know much about building a house for myself so my next best option would be to live aboard a ship in the river...but that wouldn't be very practical since I don't know how to sail.

I am certain you could learn. There are several ships here, and those that sail are willing to teach. There is little else to fill the time here, besides learning.

I am getting carried away I think, the river is a defense against the Dead for me but with none here I should be fine to stay in a proper house.

Although maybe I will look into learning how to sail. [It would be a useful skill to have if/when she went home.]

A river as a defense against the Dead? Whatever world it is you come from, I do not think I would like to visit if the dead do not lie quietly.

The Dead cannot pass through, over or under strongly flowing water.

By themselves there would be little to no problem with the Dead but some spirits are particularly adamant to return to life...others are summoned by necromancers.

Your dead sound a little like vampires, and a little like zombies, which is appropriate considering those are both, in part, a little dead.

I am...not quite certain we do not have necromancers here. But. I do not think they would make trouble for you.

Vampires and zombies? ...Those sound more like terms you'd hear in Ancelstierre. [Where, sadly, most of the people lived in willful ignorance of the dangers to the North.]

So long as they leave the Dead where they lie then there should be no problem.
