( it all comes down to strengths. he's not good at maneuvering and he knows it, so armin figures that it's best not to add more barriers to his meagre abilities if he can. making sure that the harnesses fit right might end up saving him at some point, and it doesn't take a lot of time, only an abundance of conscientiousness. when levi approaches, he pauses in mid-motion, evidently taken aback to see a familiar face when he'd resigned himself to acting alone in a brand new world. )

Captain. ( he wonders if he ought to stand and salute, it's probably something that would have been expected of him back home, but his gear is heavy in his lap and restricts his movement. he does nod in acknowledgement though. )

I'm...fine, physically. But more importantly, you sound as if you know your way around this place. How long have you been here, sir?

( to be fair, he's not even sure how long he's been here. armin might have only woken up a few hours ago, but who knows how long he might have been unconscious for? the only thing is that he doesn't remember being knocked out, not matter how far south their mission might have gone. )

About two months.

[ Levi's seen of what Armin can do - and while he's not terribly impressive in combat, the more he works with him the more his ability for strategy and thinking ahead reminds him of Erwin. That's no reason for him to not be diligent about his gear and combat readiness, however. Erwin's recently proven that those skills are necessary.

Not that it's entirely his fault what happened. Levi still wonders what might have happened otherwise had he been able to go on that mission.

No, he doesn't think about 'what ifs'. Shouldn't. It doesn't do any good.]

What's the last thing you remember before you came here?

Two months?

( levi wasn't on the mission to retrieve eren because of his injury, but it hasn't been that long since armin had seen him. and perhaps it's best that he wasn't there -- the legion lost a lot of seasoned veterans that day. armin doesn't want to let himself think about hannes right now, but his brow furrows in both confusion and distress. )

With all due respect sir, I don't understand how that's possible.

( but then, he doesn't understand how he's here, either, when his last memory was arriving back to the walls, watching mikasa get carted away for her injuries. hearing jean rattle off death statistics. )

Time doesn't matter here, apparently. People say that when you go back it's as though time stops and you can't remember anything here.

Essentially, nothing we do here matters.

[which is frustrating in and of itself - Levi hates doing unnecessary things, but he has no choice in this place. He must live and work with the situation that they're in without forgetting their real goals, without getting complacent.]

You didn't answer my question.

( time doesn't matter? armin would be skeptical of such a claim, but levi has honestly never struck him as the kind of person to play games, not with the direct way that he addresses them and gives commands. and he's already placed his trust in the captain for their lives. the suspension of his disbelief isn't such a difficult thing after that.

so time doesn't matter. in a way, it's sort of comforting. armin doesn't know what good he is to their cause, but he doesn't like to think about eren and mikasa getting into trouble when he's not there to help them as best as he can. )

The last thing I remember was returning from the mission to save Eren from Reiner and Bertholdt.

( eren's newfound titan powers. his callous manipulation of bertholdt. armin doesn't regret his words, even if it had stung to deliver them to someone he'd once considered a friend. )

It was a success.

[Armin remembers about as much as he does - encouraging, considering until this point he'd been the one who remembered the most of those already here. Erwin had been filled in (except for the part about his arm, which Levi didn't deem important or relevant enough to mention, frankly), Jean and Marco updated briefly. It'd be better if they were all on the same page, more or less.]

That's about the same for me. Good. It'll save having to explain anything.

[Levi sits next to Armin on the bench, carefully examining the dismantled pieces of the gear for any other things that should be fixed or adjusted. He doesn't really expect to find any, but sometimes having a second eye helps.]

Do you have any questions about this place?

It's so quiet here, and everything in the shops are free. Even the food. ( and that's almost unheard of for someone who comes from a world where everything was rationed. as soldiers, they're allowed to eat plain but adequate amounts, but armin's never really known abundance like this. ) It feels almost like...we're being fattened up for the slaughter.

( and maybe that sounds a little melodramatic -- or at least, it would, coming from someone who didn't reside in such a crapsack world. the only peace that humanity's known in the past century was always going to be temporary and fleeting. there are titans in the walls. armin has no doubt that one day, those titans are going to wake up. they always seem to be waiting for the next catastrophe to hit.

luceti's peace has to be temporary, too. a consolation prize for what comes next. )

Don't be fooled. There are plenty of threats to worry about.

[but Armin's concerns echo his own when he'd first arrived - ones he hasn't quite let go of, either. He still keeps at least a two week supply of food backed up in the event the Malnosso decide to cut off providing food. Everything comes too easily, at no cost. Levi can't help but be suspicious, and it's encouraging that Armin is also. It'd be easy to be taken in.]

If we were brought here for some reason, why are there weapons available? Why did they give me back my 3D gear?

( what's the point of arming the people who captured? unless they were so certain in the strength of their influence, or their fortifications, because armin hasn't seen any walls or barriers around here either.

yet. he's going to have to go into the forest at some point, because he just wants to know what's out there. )

Do you understand why we're here, sir?

They want us able to fight because they expect us to fight their war for them. Occasionally there are voluntary missions and involuntary drafts, so don't think that this is just going to be some fucking walk in the park.

I don't know the real reason why we're here.

[which essentially implies that Levi doesn't believe the reasons given. "Come fight our war" - except that it has nothing to do with any of the people they've abducted, and what's more the Malnosso seem more interested in conducting their sick experiments (which often hinder inhabitants abilities to fight). So the real reason is anyone's guess.]

If we're fighting a war, what are we fighting against?

( what, and not who. humanity used to fight amongst themselves, apparently. they used to tear each other apart over land and class and creed. not that such conflicts ceased to exist inside the walls, but the titans were a much more formidable enemy.

armin isn't comfortable with the idea of being so incredibly ignorant about everything around him, but here he is. the last piece of his gear gets meticulously checked over, and clipped into his straps. it's a little more difficult to do with the wings now, but he manages. )

The Malnosso's enemy, called the Third Party. I haven't experienced or seen them myself yet. There's a lot of information on them in that journal. Make sure you read it.

[More than anyone else (except Erwin, that is), Levi knows that Armin will be able to read the available information and put it to use strategically. Being younger, newer, with different experiences, Armin may see or understand things about this place differently than Erwin and Levi have determined so far. His insight could be incredibly valuable.]
