[When Sabriel had first awoken she almost had a panic attack. She was weaponless, her armor stripped away in favor of a light dress that was far too thin and far too disoriented for her liking. It was only after she’d scoped out her immediate surroundings, searched the area physically as well as feeling for any Dead that she finally relaxed and took proper notice of the journal lying close by.

A thorough examination of the journal and read through the guide later she’s fiddling with the pages of the thing, the video flickering on to show her frowning down at the pages, unsure of how exactly to work it at first. Regardless of what questions and frustrations she had there was something she had to get clear to whoever was already living here, especially if they came across her equipment.]

If anyone happens to come across a brown leather bandolier of bells, please do NOT touch them unless you want to possibly die a swift death.

And I mean that in the most literal sense I can express.

[She gives the screen a very stern look, eyes narrowed and hard to fully impress her seriousness of the situation before sits back a bit as she sighs.]

With that out of the way, does anyone know where I might acquire a pair of breeches? Or rather, how to get there? I’m currently…well.

[The screen tilts as she lifts the journal, slowing turning on the spot to show her completely surrounded by trees, no other landmarks in sight.]

Any help would be very much appreciated. And please do not ignore my earlier warning.

Yes please. [Sabriel returns the small smile, although her joy at being warm is slowly giving way to the heartache she arrived at Luceti with, her face looking worn and tired in more ways than one.] I am A-...Sabriel. Call me Sabriel.

No debts whatsoever. The way we survive here is by helping one another. There is no government, no currency, just the community trying to survive. And doing quite well, I might add. [Adele nods and releases Sabriel's hand, leading her down a path upstream to the village.]

[Sabriel listens quietly, letting it all sink in.] Other than the people who took us there are no problems? No...no Dead?

Problems? There is the odd kidnapping and experiment, but those are caused by our captors. As for ...what do you mean by Dead? If one is dead, there is no trouble. They are dead.

Those were mentioned in the guide, yes. As for the Dead... [Sabriel had heard talk like this before, Southerners who were adamantly ignorant of the threats found to the North over the Wall.] Where I am from, the Dead can return if the spirit is particularly strong, or called back to life by a Free Magic necromancer. There have been no reports of missing people, ravenous crows or strange shadows?

...More magic. Wonderful.

As far as I am aware there is nothing explicitly like that here. Similar? It is possible. But exactly like that? I do not know. People that are missing have been taken by the Malnosso or sent home. I am not aware of any ravenous birds, nor strange shadows.

Only in the Old Kingdom-that is to say, the land north of the Wall. The south is driven by technology and science. Not that it would do them any good against what might come from the Wall. [Her expression gets a little dark but with Adele's reassurance she relaxes a bit.] That is good...very good.

No, no. Magic and Science coexist here. How, I will never know, but they do. Luceti is a strange world with stranger rules.

They do? [Tipping her head in thought, Sabriel pulls a hand from her glove to press a finger to the Charter mark on her forehead. Instead of the familiar warmth and glow of the Charter flowing endlessly in a warm flash under her fingertip the skin remains cool and dull. Much like when she had been too far south from the Wall.] There is no Wall here or Charter Stones...my Charter Magic will not work.

I do now know what that is, but it must be important to you and those that use that type of magic. Do not worry, Luceti has a magic all it's own. There are spirits you may contact to learn what they would teach. Classes on how to contact them as well. Given time perhaps even your own magic will work again.

It's the only way to counter Free Magic. That is to say, Charter magic is organized where as Free magic is chaos and power, a force that will corrupt and devour you. [The mention of Luceti's own brand of magic piques her interest but half of her is still missing with the Charter gone.] Charter magic requires a medium, a channel. In the Old Kingdom we could reach it through the Charter stones...at least before they started being broken. [Sabriel shivers, the sickness induced by the broken stones still fresh in her memory.]

I do not think we have any Free Magic here; though I am not certain. In my world there is no magic, so any and all is new and strange to me. But there is a man that I live with that should know. I will ask him for you once we are in town. if I can find him.

If I had my bells I would be able to test for myself. [For a moment Sabriel is tempted to whistle the peal of Ranna, smallest and safest of the bells to test but no. She would not take advantage of the kindess of the woman who came to her rescue.] I would appreciate that Doctor, thank you.

I am certain that you will find them given time. Personal effects, especially those you had on you, have a habit of appearing in the stores shortly after you arrive. Sometimes they take longer, though. I am still waiting on a few items I know I carried when I was brought here.

It is no trouble. Anything that can be done to ease the transition ought to be done.

The sooner they are in my possession again the better. There are dire consequences when the bells ring in an inexperienced hand. It is...fortunate then that Astarael was not with me when I was taken. [Her last point is said with some difficulty, her eyes betraying the ache that accompanies the thought of the bell.]

I will let it be known among those that I can that should bells be found, they are not to be touched, let alone rung. I do not entirely understand their purpose, but I do not need to. None of us do. We shall see they are safely returned to you Mademoiselle Sabriel.

[Adele had been honest with her so far, about who she was, what her world was like and a bit about Luceti. It was only right that she return the gesture...once they were inside.] When we meet with your friend I will explain their significance. My significance.

Only if you feel you must. Otherwise your privacy is your own. [Adele pauses to breathe at the next tree, snorting.] That. That is it. I am giving up the cigarettes. This should not wind me so.

I cannot hide who and what I am for my own protection. [When Adele stops she watches her, concern flickering across her face.] We could rest for a while if you need to, I do not mind now that I've some proper clothing.

This? No. It is a much needed reminder that I am not so young I can smoke however much I like in a fit of pique any longer. I will simply have to find another way to busy my hands in times of stress.
