[Action:

This world is very, very different than Gaspard is used to. Gone is the French Empire, rising from the ashes of the French Republic. Gone is the war. Gone is his usual employment.

In fact, there is little need for any employment here, but no one has cause to trust a man who doesn't work. He has learned that. There are no politics that he can easily involve himself in at present, so he settles for a former occupation.

The trappings of the blacksmiths are used, always graciously and with express interest to keep out of their way and not disturb them, for silversmithing as well. Even after so long away from the work, old habits resurface quickly, and there are products to be bartered or given. Decorations, cups, dining utensils, and bangles and bands for wearing are all available. The actual amount of them that are silver are rare, but lead, iron, and pewter are in fair supply here.

Throughout the day, Gaspard can be found tending the molten metals, casting them to their shapes, moulding the items into their needed detail, stocking the shelves he's claimed, or outside in the considerably cooler air carving new moulds.]

[Written:]

I find myself continually amazed by this strange land I have been brought to. For instance, I marvel over the ability to alter perceptions of languages so that one needs never worry about not being understood due to that cause. The lack of government, too, is fascinating.

Where I am from, I admit, there were always a great many men crying out to others why they ought to follow where these men would lead, espousing their views on the greatest good and so on.

I am impressed [revolted is more like it, but he certainly won't say that] that a village of this side has not given in to the temptation of politics.

[This place? Makes her nervous as hell. The magic is palpable. From the barrier to the talking animals to self-repairing homes, she's lost track of the multitude of enchantments she comes into contact with here every day. Especially the wings. She hates them, but she's learned to leave them alone. Attempting to cut the left one the first day she was here taught her that. Her back still hurts every time she thinks about it.

But Gretel doesn't let wariness cripple her. Food is a never-ending debate: does she eat magically replenishing food or an animal under a spell to speak? Usually she settles for a combination of that and fresh food found in the forest and fields.

Today, she hunts in the forest. When she has three birds, she shoves two into a box packed with snow to keep them cold. The third, she cooks over an open flame. The roasted bird is left as goodwill in the bakery, and she takes a couple loaves of bread. She browses the weapon shop for her still absent crossbow. After a trip to the item shop to look over the shelves, she puts her birds away in the fridge of the communal kitchen for the housing she took.

At the end of the day, she'll be in Good Spirits, enjoying honeyed ale that reminds her of her world and her brother.]

[Her armor and her sword are safely hidden away. Her longbow -- a gift from the camp of the Dalish she met after leaving her own clan -- is all the protection she has. (Well, and a layer of leather stitched against her chest, under her loose, long shirt and sewn to the inside of the pants she wears.)

She makes almost no sound as she ventures through the forest from dawn to early afternoon.

Having hunted enough for supper, she comes to the village about midday, collecting cooking supplies and browsing the item shop to see if any more of her things have come.

She'll take a couple of hours to herself, getting more acquainted with this part of this strange place. For the last seven days, she's kept herself to a portion of the forest that reminded her most of her clan. Not that she hasn't been giving the Journal a look-over every so often, speaking to a few who seem interesting or whom she has met during the short times she's come out of the woods before. (Or those who have met her in the woods.)]

[When, you may ask, did the man strolling down the street arrive in Luceti?

Well, that's rather difficult to say. Surely one hasn't seen him before, so he must be a New Feather, but he is already walking about without much concern for his surroundings, suggesting a familiarity that such an arrival cannot give.

He's a tall young man, darkly coloured, and there's a little smile on his face as she goes about. His clothes are a little old-fashioned, Edwardian at best, but he is also quite at ease with the motley wings on his back, which rest placidly.

His eyes shine a little as he sees someone. Just who he was looking for.

Harley Quin always knows just where he needs to be just when.

His course and pace change, and soon he's alongside, walking in step toward the café. Surely, by the look of him, that had been his destination all along. Lightly, he addresses the person he's now walking with.]

Fine time for coffee, isn't it?

[And he chuckles at the coincidence of both of them deciding to go to the same place just then.]

[Line by line, the drawing appears. No, the drawings appear.

They're all of the same little lizard, but they are carefully done from multiple angles. The precise, detailed depictions... are in stark contrast to the hastily scrawled notes about the creature, appearing near key features or generally off to the side. Colours are taken down, as well as general size (the picture, according to one nearly illegible citation) is scaled by half.

name: appears above the drawings, but it remains blank. Off to the side, scribbled words appear. Check library for records. If none then a list of scientific name suggestions. Notes for himself.

That this can be seen by everyone who might glance down at their Journals doesn't bother the naturalist. Luceti may not currently allow him all the company he would have if given his choice, but it does, at least, grant him a variety of new creatures to study.]

Luceti has quite a fine collection of sea vessels.

[Edward Burr's voice is jovial, and he's mastered these books enough to show off a view of where he stands.

The Joanna Joyce is right in front of him, the Britannia moored much further to the south but still visible on the horizon, more due to her size than anything else. Other sails are seen faintly up north.]

I've been at sea since I was a boy, and, Lord's blood, I miss it. Six months back in England and three more here since I've been out.

So, I put myself at the village's mercy: Would there be great objection to my adding a little brigantine to the number? Nothing fancy, just a little girl to get out to sea.

Capitaine Martineau and I should be most grateful.

[In parting, he turns the books back to him and touches the brim of his hat with all due politeness.]

[Never let it be said that a Career is against learning.

The village provides food-- good food and for free--, but Clove isn't inclined to trust that this will last forever. She assumed her food supply was secure once; three nights of falling asleep with hunger pains were her punishment for that. So, now, she is trying to learn the skills she previously discounted.

Two attempts are already set up. Handmade nets-- string woven together to discourage breakge and tied together in moderate-sized squares-- are positioned. One is laid out in the brush. The other is dipped in the stream, supported by a stick secured on the bank with a small stone structure. It only extends halfway across, and the dark twine shows under the water easily.

She has three other methods with her: more twine and a book on snares, a shoddy hand-made fishing pole, and a sharpened stick to use as a spear. More Cato's style than hers, but he isn't here... So she'll try to learn.

She's talking to herself, muttering as she tries to make a snare. Not as easy as the book makes it look. Her tone is determined, not angry.]

C'mon, Clove. If District Twelve can do it, so can you.

[He found a bar. A quiet, little place. All the kinds of liquor a man could ask for...

He swallowed hard and sat down at the end of the bar, staring at the wall of bottles. His throat was dry, almost ached for the taste of a strong whiskey to burn as it went down with water. He licked his lips but pulled out his journal.

He wrote in it:]

Anyone found a gun around? Rifle or handgun. I'm not picky. Just something to shoot these damned out-of-a-kid's-movie talking animals.

[Someone sounds very, very annoyed.]

These "Malnosso" who stock your shops are idiots. Not that I'm surprised at this point. Why should they be any more intelligent than most of the people in power in a "normal" society?

I've found cigarettes. Your hospital is wonderfully supplied. Stimulants, depressants... Everything one could possibly want. And in so many forms: liquids with needles, pills.

And yet. Not one single nicotine patch in this entire place.

Sets a bad example, doesn't it? So much temptation everywhere... and absolutely no legal deterrents.
